Auckland Transport runs the buses, trains and most ferries, and a single tap-on tap-off HOP card works across all three at cheaper fares than cash. The city centre, waterfront and nearest cones are walkable, ferries cover the harbour and islands, and rideshare fills in the short hops the timetable does not.
What is an AT HOP card?
It is Auckland's prepaid transport card. You load money onto it and tap on and off buses, trains and ferries, paying a lower fare than buying single paper tickets. You can buy and top up HOP cards at machines, convenience stores and the transport hubs. For a visitor staying more than a day or two it pays for itself quickly.
Can you reach the main sights by public transport?
Most of them. Trains and buses reach the central suburbs, Mount Eden and the universities. Ferries from the downtown terminal serve Devonport, Waiheke and Rangitoto. The food strips on Dominion and Sandringham Roads are on frequent bus routes. The main things that are awkward without a car are the west coast beaches like Piha and some further-out day trips.
When do you actually need a car?
For the west coast and longer day trips. Piha and the Waitākere Ranges, rural beaches and self-drive trips to places like Hobbiton are much easier with a car, since public transport there is limited or nonexistent. A common approach is to do the city car-free and rent a car only for the days you head out of town.
