North Head in Devonport adds historic tunnels to explore. All are free, and the views beat anything you pay for.
Walk the waterfront and the beaches
The harbour edge is made for wandering. The Viaduct and Wynyard Quarter are easy and central, lined with boats and open space. For sand, Mission Bay, Takapuna and Point Chevalier are all free city beaches, good for a swim in summer or a walk any time. The Devonport ferry costs a little but the views across the harbour are worth it.
