How to Price a Self-Guided Tour App

A self-guided tour app can be sold several ways: a one-off purchase, a subscription, a free app with paid upgrades, or resold through travel marketplaces. The right model depends on how often people come back and how you reach them.

How should you price a self-guided tour?

Start from how people will use it. A tour someone takes once on a trip suits a one-off price or a marketplace sale, while a guide locals return to over time suits a subscription or a free-plus-upgrade model. There is no single right answer, and many operators mix models. The key is to match the pricing to the behaviour rather than copying whatever a competitor happens to charge.

One-off purchase vs subscription

These are the two ends of the spectrum. A one-off purchase is simple and fits a tour aimed at visitors who will use it once, since they pay, take it, and move on. A subscription fits content that keeps growing or a guide people use repeatedly, trading a higher single sale for recurring revenue. Subscriptions are harder to sustain unless the value keeps coming, so they work best where the content genuinely updates and expands.

Freemium and upsells

A middle path is to give part away and charge for the rest. A free taster, say one short tour or the first few stops, lets people try the experience with no risk, then pay to unlock the full set. This lowers the barrier to that first download and lets the product sell itself, which is powerful for an unknown brand. The art is choosing how much to give before the paywall so the free part is genuinely useful but leaves people wanting the rest.

Selling through marketplaces

You do not have to sell only through your own app. Tours can be packaged and resold through travel marketplaces and booking platforms, where holidaymakers are already shopping for things to do, often using a redemption code that unlocks the experience in the app. That puts the product in front of buyers you would struggle to reach directly, in exchange for a platform cut. Many operators run their own direct sales and a marketplace channel side by side.
