One Tree Hill gives you a landmark in the frame. The tall summit obelisk works as a foreground subject with the city stretching out behind, and the surrounding Cornwall Park parkland and avenues of trees give softer options lower down. It is a different, more composed shot than Mount Eden's raw panorama.
Mount Victoria (Takarunga) for the harbour
For the city across the water, cross to Devonport. Mount Victoria is a short climb above the village and looks back over the Waitematā Harbour to the Auckland skyline, with boats and ferries in the foreground. Pair it with North Head nearby for harbour-mouth angles. The ferry ride over is part of the appeal.
When is the best light?
Sunrise and the golden hour before sunset, as with most cityscapes. Mount Eden faces a broad arc so it works for both, while a harbour view from Devonport catches warm evening light on the city face.
