Is Auckland Expensive? A Visitor's Budget Guide
Auckland is moderately expensive by global standards, on a par with other developed-world cities, but it is easy to control. The biggest savings come from eating in the suburbs, leaning on the free attractions, and not staying right on the waterfront.
Is Auckland expensive?
It is mid-to-high by international standards, rather than extreme. Auckland sits in the range of other developed-world cities, more expensive than much of Asia or southern Europe, cheaper than the priciest global capitals. New Zealand's distance means some imported goods cost more, and eating and drinking out is where visitors feel it most. The upside is that a lot of the best of the city, the cones, beaches and parks, is free.
Where the money goes
Two things dominate a visitor's budget: where you sleep and where you eat. Accommodation is the biggest single cost, and it climbs in the central city and on the waterfront in summer. Eating and drinking out adds up fast if you stick to the tourist strips. Transport, attractions and activities matter, but they are usually a smaller share than beds and meals.
How to keep costs down
Small choices make a real difference. Eat where locals eat, in the suburbs along Dominion and Sandringham Roads and in the Asian food courts, where a filling meal costs a fraction of a waterfront one. Stay slightly out of the centre and use an AT HOP card on buses, trains and ferries rather than taxis. Lean on the free attractions, and self-cater some meals if your accommodation allows.
What's free or cheap?
A surprising amount. Climbing the volcanic cones is free and gives the best views in the city. The beaches at Mission Bay and Takapuna cost nothing, as do the Auckland Domain, Cornwall Park and the Parnell Rose Gardens. The Auckland Art Gallery has free general entry. Build a trip around these and Auckland becomes a much cheaper city than its reputation suggests.
