Auckland has calm harbour beaches close in and wild surf beaches a little further out, and they offer very different days. The eastern bays and North Shore give safe, sheltered swimming a short trip from the centre, while the west coast brings powerful surf and black sand. For an easy beach day, stay east. For scenery and waves, head west.
Mission Bay and the eastern bays
Mission Bay is the classic city beach, a sweep of sand a short drive or bus from the centre, backed by cafes, an ice-cream walk and a fountain. The water is calm and good for a swim, and the promenade is made for strolling. The neighbouring bays along the eastern waterfront give more of the same, sheltered, easy and close to town.
Takapuna and the North Shore
Across the harbour, Takapuna Beach is the North Shore's favourite, a long stretch of sand with a view straight out to Rangitoto and a cafe scene behind it. It is calm, popular and easy to reach over the bridge or by ferry and bus. Point Chevalier, closer to the west, is another sheltered, family-friendly option on the inner harbour.
The wild west coast
For surf and scenery, the west coast is unmissable but needs respect. Beaches like Piha sit under dramatic black cliffs with powerful waves and strong rips, so swim only between the flags where patrolled. They are about 40 minutes to an hour from the city and feel a world away. A car is really needed, as public transport out there is limited.
