Where Is Edoras and How Do You Get to Mount Sunday?
Edoras, the capital of Rohan, was filmed at Mount Sunday in inland Canterbury, about two to two and a half hours' drive from Christchurch. A short walk of around 30 minutes each way reaches the summit, though the last stretch of road is gravel with stream crossings.
Where is Edoras?
Edoras was filmed on Mount Sunday, an isolated 611-metre hill rising from the floor of the upper Rangitata Valley in the Hakatere Conservation Park, inland Canterbury on the South Island. The hall of Meduseld and the rest of the set were built on and around it, then completely removed after filming. What remains is the hill and the vast valley, which match Tolkien's Rohan strikingly well.
How do you get to Mount Sunday?
Drive about two to two and a half hours from Christchurch, heading inland through the Ashburton Gorge toward Erewhon. The last stretch, roughly 17 to 26 kilometres, is unsealed gravel and includes a ford and stream crossings. The road is usually fine for a 2WD in good conditions but can wash out after rain or ice over in winter, so check conditions and carry chains in snow season.
How long is the walk?
Short and mostly easy. From the car park a flat gravel track crosses the river flats and two bridges, including a swing bridge, then climbs the southern spur to the summit. It is around 30 minutes each way, with one steeper section near the top that can be slippery when wet. The 360-degree view over the Rangitata Valley and surrounding ranges is the reward.
Can you visit without driving the gravel road?
Yes, on a guided tour. Operators run Edoras day trips from Christchurch and Methven, and some carry replica props for photos and share behind-the-scenes detail. A tour takes the rough drive and navigation off your hands, though some leave limited time at the top. It also gets you there if you would rather not risk the fords in a hire car.
