Best Lord of the Rings Locations on the North Island

For a short trip, the best Lord of the Rings locations on the North Island are Hobbiton near Matamata, Tongariro National Park for Mordor, Mount Victoria and Weta Workshop in Wellington, and Kaitoke Regional Park for Rivendell. They cluster well for a few days.

What are the best North Island LOTR locations?

If you are short on time and staying on the North Island, these are the ones to prioritise.

Hobbiton, near Matamata

The single must-do, and the only place where original sets still stand. The Shire was built on a working farm near Matamata, about two hours south of Auckland, and is open daily on a guided tour. It is also the most popular, so book ahead. This is the closest major location to Auckland.

Tongariro National Park for Mordor

The dramatic heart of the North Island shoot. Mount Ngauruhoe stood in for Mount Doom, and the park's volcanic terrain appears across the Mordor scenes. You can take it in on a drive and short walks, or commit to the full Tongariro Alpine Crossing if you are fit and the weather holds. It is roughly central, between Auckland and Wellington.

Wellington: Mount Victoria and Weta Workshop

Peter Jackson's home city holds the densest cluster of locations. Mount Victoria, in the central city, is where the hobbits hid from the Black Rider, and the forested spot is easy to reach. Weta Workshop in the suburb of Miramar is not a filming location but is where much of the props and effects were made, and the Weta Cave is open to visitors.

Kaitoke Regional Park for Rivendell

About 45 minutes from Wellington, Kaitoke's dense native bush was Rivendell. The sets are gone, but a replica Elven archway marks the spot and reference boards explain what was filmed there. It is an easy, free addition to a Wellington leg of the trip.
