The South Island Lord of the Rings Locations
The South Island holds the most dramatic Lord of the Rings locations, from Edoras at Mount Sunday to the Pelennor Fields near Twizel and Lothlórien near Glenorchy. They are spread out and need real driving time.
What LOTR locations are on the South Island?
The big, sweeping ones. Where the North Island carries the Shire and Mordor, the South Island holds Rohan, Gondor's battlefields and the elven and river country. The headline locations are Edoras at Mount Sunday in Canterbury, the Pelennor Fields near Twizel, and the Glenorchy and Queenstown area, which stood in for Lothlórien, Isengard and stretches of the Anduin. The landscapes are the draw as much as the films.
Edoras and the Mackenzie Country
Edoras, the capital of Rohan, was built on Mount Sunday, an isolated hill in the Rangitata Valley about two and a half hours from Christchurch. The set is gone but the hill and valley remain, reached by a gravel road and a short walk. Further south near Twizel, the Battle of the Pelennor Fields was filmed on farmland, now visited by tour, set in the wide Mackenzie Country of turquoise lakes and big skies.
The Queenstown and Glenorchy area
Around Queenstown and the small town of Glenorchy, the films found their elven and river landscapes. The Paradise area near Glenorchy stood in for Lothlórien and Isengard, and the rivers and lakes of the region appear as the Anduin and surrounding country. It is a stunning corner of the South Island regardless of the films, with the locations folded into wider hikes, drives and jet-boat trips.
How long do you need?
Budget 6 to 8 days for the South Island locations done comfortably. They are far apart, with long drives between Canterbury, the Mackenzie Country and Queenstown, and some access roads are gravel. Trying to rush them means more time in the car than at the places. Treat the driving as part of the trip, since the scenery between the locations is much of the reward.
