Lord of the Rings Filming Locations in Wellington
Wellington holds the densest cluster of Lord of the Rings locations, since it was Peter Jackson's home base. Mount Victoria, Kaitoke for Rivendell and Weta Workshop are all within easy reach, which makes the city a strong stop even on a short trip.
What LOTR locations are in Wellington?
A lot, packed close together. Wellington was the production's home, so the city and its surrounds hold the highest concentration of locations in the films. The main ones for visitors are Mount Victoria in the central city, Kaitoke Regional Park just north, and Weta Workshop in the suburb of Miramar. You can cover the key spots in a day or two without long drives, which is rare for Middle-earth locations.
Mount Victoria
Mount Victoria's town belt, a forested park right in the central city, was used for several Shire and early-journey scenes. The best known is where the hobbits hide from the Black Rider, scrambling off the road and under a bank as it passes. The large tree root in that scene was a prop, but part of the setting is real and easy to find. The summit also gives one of the best views over Wellington.
Kaitoke Regional Park (Rivendell)
About 45 minutes north of the city, Kaitoke's dense native bush became Rivendell, the elven valley. The sets are long gone, but a replica Elven archway, gifted later, marks the spot, and reference boards explain what was filmed there. It is a free, easy addition to a Wellington leg, and a pleasant patch of bush to walk regardless of the film connection.
Weta Workshop and the Weta Cave
Weta Workshop in Miramar is where much of the props, weapons, armour and creatures were made. The working studio is not open to wander, but the Weta Cave lets visitors see original pieces and take behind-the-scenes tours. It is the closest you get to the craft behind the films. If you only have a short stop in Wellington, pair Weta with Mount Victoria for an easy half-day.
