Weta Workshop: What to Know Before You Visit
Weta Workshop in Wellington made much of the props, weapons and creatures for the Lord of the Rings, and the Weta Cave lets visitors see original pieces and go behind the scenes. It is in the suburb of Miramar.
What is Weta Workshop?
Weta Workshop is the Wellington effects and props company behind much of the physical craft in the Lord of the Rings, from armour and weapons to creatures and miniatures. It has worked on many films since, and remains a working studio in the suburb of Miramar, near Peter Jackson's wider film operation. For fans, it is the home of the hand-made side of Middle-earth.
What can you see there?
The public face is the Weta Cave and its guided experiences. You can see original props, models and creatures up close, learn how they were made, and on the workshop tours watch artists at work and handle some pieces. There is a shop with collectibles and replicas. The working studio itself is not a general walk-through, so the Cave and its tours are how visitors get inside the craft.
Weta Workshop Unleashed in Auckland
There is also a separate Weta experience in Auckland, Weta Workshop Unleashed, in the city centre. It is an interactive, behind-the-scenes attraction about how films are made, rather than the original Wellington workshop. If you are based in Auckland and will not reach Wellington, Unleashed is the local way to get a taste of the Weta world, though the original workshop and its film history are in Miramar.
How to visit
Weta Workshop and the Weta Cave are in Miramar, a short drive or bus ride from central Wellington and very close to the airport. Booking ahead is wise for the guided tours, especially in summer, while the Cave and shop are easier to drop into. Pair it with Mount Victoria in the city for a compact Lord of the Rings half-day if your time in Wellington is short.
