At Dry Creek Quarry, in the hills between Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt near Wellington. The vast fortress of Helm's Deep was built as a large-scale set in the quarry, where the long night-time battle was shot over many weeks. The same quarry was later used to build the Minas Tirith set. It was chosen partly because a working quarry could take a huge, heavy build away from public areas.
Why a quarry?
Because the scale demanded it. Helm's Deep was one of the biggest sets in the trilogy, and the battle was filmed mostly at night in difficult conditions over a long shoot. A quarry gave the space, the rugged backdrop and the privacy for that kind of build, away from roads and houses. No, not really. Dry Creek Quarry is private working land and is not set up for visitors, so unlike Hobbiton or Kaitoke there is no public site to walk. The set itself is long gone. This is one of the locations that is better understood than visited, so the honest answer is to admire it on screen and spend your Wellington time on the spots you can actually reach.
