Where were the Pelennor Fields filmed?
On open farmland near the small town of Twizel, in the Mackenzie Country of the central South Island. The huge battle before the gates of Minas Tirith, where the armies of Rohan and Gondor meet Sauron's forces, was staged across these flat grassy fields backed by mountains. It was the largest single location in the films, with hundreds of people and horses involved in the shoot.
Why Twizel?
Because the landscape matched and the space was there. The wide, flat tussock fields running to distant mountains fit the scale the battle needed, and the remote Mackenzie Country gave room for an enormous production far from public areas. The look of the place, big open ground under big skies, is exactly what the scene called for, which is why the fields read so convincingly on screen.
Can you visit?
Yes, but only on a tour. The fields are on private farmland, so you cannot simply drive up, but operators in Twizel run tours to the Pelennor location, sometimes with replica props and behind-the-scenes detail. Booking one is the way to actually stand on the battlefield. Without a tour you can still enjoy the surrounding Mackenzie Country, which is spectacular in its own right.
The wider Mackenzie Country
Twizel sits in one of the most striking parts of the South Island. Nearby Lake Pukaki, with its intense turquoise water and views toward Aoraki Mount Cook, was used as Laketown in The Hobbit, and the whole region is a dark-sky reserve famous for its night skies. Even setting the films aside, the Mackenzie Country is worth the trip, with the Pelennor tour as a bonus for fans.
